Salzburg Travel Guide | Throwback Thursday
Feeling in the mood to reminisce, so what better time to do so than on throwback Thursday. When I was 13, I visited Salzburg in Austria. To this day, it remains one of my most memorable trips, if not the most. There’s so much to see and do in such a small area and there’s a real sense of culture. If you enjoyed my post on Seville and are seeking more European city adventures, then this Salzburg travel guide is perfect for you.
I will say now that I went in 2011, but I’ve double checked and all these sites are still open.
Hallein Salt Mine
Ironically, the 2 places where my family and I spent the most time were not in the centre of Salzburg, but a short bus journey away. The Hallein Salt Mine is a must-visit. Once you get changed into the white overalls, travelling through the mine is certainly interesting. The combination of an electric train, slides and a boat trip across an underground lake is an unforgettable experience.
Unfortunately I don’t have pictures of the mine. As you can probably guess, it was dark and cameras weren’t as good 8 years ago. However, as you walk through the tunnels (wouldn’t recommend if you’re claustrophobic), you cross the German border, so you can say you’ve been to both countries!
Untersberg Cable Car and Mountain
The great thing about Salzburg is that it has the appeal of being a city, but is surrounded by beautiful countryside and mountains. Untersberg is located on the Austrian-German border and is part of the Berchtesgaden Alps. If you’re looking to do some hiking, then this is the place to go. There’s a cable car which takes you up over 1000m and once you’re at the top, you can enjoy the stunning 360 degree scenery.
You may also recognise the mountain from the beginning and end of The Sound of Music.
Sound of Music Film Locations
Speaking of, if you’re a fan of The Sound of Music, then Salzburg is the place to go, with many locations across the area being used in the film. One of the most recognisable is the Mirabell Palace and Gardens.
Die-hard fans can do guided tours too.
Mozart Birthplace
Did you know Salzburg was the birthplace of one of the most famous composers of all-time? Sadly, we didn’t have time to visit the house, but it looks beautiful from the outside.
A Lovely Place
Aside from all these attractions, a main reason for booking Salzburg as your next trip is that it is a beautiful place. From the architecture to the alpine walks, everything is on your doorstep and there really is something for everyone.

The salt mine was probably the best bit. Not everyday you get to go down a mine on a slide! I hadn’t seen the Sound of Music when I went as I was a lot younger but so glad I’ve seen it now! X
Oh wow, Salzburg looks beautiful! Mozart’s house is so pretty! The detailing around the windows is so nice. Amazing architecture and design. I think it’s such a good idea to reflect and reminisce on past holidays and trips. This one sounds like it was very special to you.
So sad I didn’t get time to go inside. Will do in the future. You’re so right. I think remembering these things reminds us of how lucky we are X

Rain can really change your perception of a place! Not sure when the best time is weather-wise but definitely go and catch some sunshine if you can. The mountains are beautiful x
