Secondhand September: 4 Ways to Thrift Shop
Thereโs a lot of โthemedโ months that exist now, designed to help make a positive impact. From Stoptober to Dry January to Plastic Free July, these monthly challenges raise awareness for a variety of causes such as health or the environment. This month, Secondhand September has now arrived! The scheme is primarily led by Oxfam (this post is not a collaboration though).ย
What with fast fashion at an all-time high and so many clothes ending up in landfill, fashion is one of the worst sectors when it comes to the environment.
Secondhand September encourages you to say no to new clothes for a month (and hopefully more) and instead give a second life to clothes that would otherwise be thrown away.ย
If you donโt know where to start though, here are some places to start thrifting!
Depop
Depop has become so popular in recent years. The marketplace app allows you to sell clothes and accessories that you no longer want, so they can find a new home. You can then buy clothes yourself and often save money. A good way to get some nice vintage outfits.
Sometimes, you might find a brand new item that someone decided they donโt actually need/like.
Charity Shops
I have to admit that Iโm yet to fully get into the charity shop thrifting experience. I know some younger people have this mindset that charity shops are only for older people, but you can get some great bargains if youโre willing to take the time to look.ย
Even if the clothes arenโt your cup of tea, charity shops are great places to buy books, dvds etc.
Clothes Swaps
More and more clothes swaps events are making an appearance. As the name suggests, everyone brings along some clothes they donโt want anymore and you can swap them if someone else has bought items that you like.
Do some research to see if there are any in your local area, and if not, set one up!
An easy way to clothes swap is with family and friends. Iโve ended up with a few of my mumโs clothes that she doesnโt want and we tend to have a similar fashion taste, so it works out rather well.
Use your Current Wardrobe
While Secondhand September may seem like you have to go out and buy/swap clothes, one of the easiest things to do is focus on your current wardrobe first. Can you create a different outfit with accessories you already have? Are there items of clothing you havenโt thought about pairing together before?
Pin for later

Use this month to practise a โno buyโ or โlow buyโ lifestyle. Find what works for you and then implement that strategy long-term, so that you can be eco-friendly and still have your ideal wardrobe.

LOVED this post Megan! Second Hand September is such a brilliant concept and it’s great to see content focusing on it. I had a Depop parcel arrive today and I love how it means you can access fashion with less plastic packaging, often cheaper prices, and that second hand items can be loved by someone else! Great post x
Thank you! So true!
I’ve bought quite a few pieces from charity shops (and about a million books) so I’m actually quite open to going in and having a look! (Although sometimes I do understand why young people get an old person vibe) I have yet to buy anything from Depop but that is mainly because I don’t tend to buy new clothes. Two years ago I made a goal to try go 6 months without purchasing new clothing so it’s defo one of my habits already. Thanks for sharing Megan! ๐
Awesome! Charity shops are great for books even if you’re not sure about the clothes!
Great post! I love second hand, especially at car boot sales or charity shops, you never quite know what you’re going to find. Shopping my wardrobe is something I need to get better at doing.
So true! These things take time to master so you’ll get better!
These are some great tips, I think it’s high time we start thinking about the planet and how our greed is making a dent on it. With fast fashion on the rise, it’s important to see its consequences and opt for a sustainable lifestyle.
Yes exactly!
Great post! I love writing about vintage clothing on my own blog so it’s great to other bloggers sharing the love for second hand clothing! I regularly visit my local charity shops and always seem to find amazing jackets and coats there ๐ x
