Why People Won’t Read Your Blog (and How to Fix It)
When I first started blogging, my traffic was awful! Someone would read my blog, but never come back. This has changed now and I have learnt a lot along the way. It turns out that losing visitors could be for the smallest of reasons. So, once someone has discovered your blog, how do you ensure those readers come back to your site? Or do you know why people won’t read your blog? Over the years, I realised that there are a few things which put me off visiting a blog again and I could relate that to my early blogging days. Here are some ideas on how to improve your blog so it’s the best it can be.
Unfinished Design
When starting a blog, the technical aspects are confusing, even on, for example, the free WordPress platform, which is good for beginners. I visited some blogs recently that had lots of posts, but design-wise were unfinished. There might be an empty text widget in the sidebar or a page which still has the Latin text template.
These are simple things to fix in the theme customise area and could make all the difference to your traffic.
Writing Errors
As much as Instagram, Pinterest and graphic design are becoming a part of blogging, let’s not forget the main substance of a blog is the writing. Regardless of whether it’s a post or a photo caption, always double check your work for typos, grammatical mistakes etc.
Now, I don’t mind the odd error, I’m guilty of that. Sometimes we don’t spot mistakes in our own work no matter how many times we proofread it.
However, when there’s an error in every sentence, for me it shows a lack of care. If you’re looking to turn your blog into a business, your writing reflects you, so just make sure to double check all your work.
Pop-ups
This is a bit of a pet peeve for me. I hate it when you go on a website and have to close 3 or 4 pop-ups. I don’t mind one for a newsletter, and none of us can do anything about the cookie banner. Anything else though should perhaps go in a sidebar or newsletter email. Visitors shouldn’t have to fight lots of pop-ups to read the content.
These are really simply reasons why people won’t read your blog. They can be fixed in a matter of minutes and could make such a difference to the number of views on your site.

Really helpful post – I think people forget how quickly the internet moves and how fast someone will click off if a page doesn’t load or there are too many pop ups! I’m happy with my blog other than my menu I cannot get to show parent and child format to fit more categories – you’ve inspired me to work on it today! Melis

I know some people think pop-ups catch attention but yeah, for me they catch the wrong kind of attention because often they’ll deter me from reading the post I’ve clicked on in the first place!
