University Packing

I stress about packing big time. I never know what, or how much, stuff to take. University was a nightmare (packing wise), and after realising that I brought way too much with me in 1st year, I tried to cut back in 2nd year. I still overdid it, but the amount wasn’t quite so ridiculous, and I have now learnt what I really need. Freshers, if you’re worrying about what to take, here’s some university packing advice to get you started.

Clothes

An important one. You don’t need your entire wardrobe. Think seasons. There’s no point taking summer dresses and shorts when you’re about to start the Autumn/Winter term. As you’ll no doubt be going home at Christmas, Easter etc., there’s time to have a wardrobe season switch then. What’s more, if you’re in halls, the storage space could be limited, so choose wisely. Perhaps pack based on outfits too. Take items you know will go with lots of things. I recommend having a sort out before you go and seeing if there’s any clothes you don’t wear anymore and if you’re missing any clothing essentials.

Kitchen

For self-catered life at uni, you don’t need to pack 16-piece dinner and cutlery sets. 2 of everything is fine. One main, and a backup. Although it’s still a good idea to keep spares at home in case of extreme breakages.
Of course, you don’t need 2 potato peelers, graters etc. just the everyday use items such as plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, knives, forks, and spoons.

With regards to appliances like irons, kettles, and toasters, sometimes these are already provided, so double check your accommodation details. If they aren’t, liaise with your flatmates, so you’re not all paying for the same things.

Printers

This is a personal one, but I think it’s possible to survive uni without a printer. I bought one for 1st year, but stopped using it after the ink ran out, because ink is so expensive. It worked out cheaper to upload printer credits to my university account and use the library. Whilst this is a bit annoying if you live far away for university, perhaps try saving all your documents and having bulk printing sessions. I was lucky in that a lot of lecturers gave us handouts too, so less printing was required. Plus, printers take up a surprising amount of space!

Toiletries

Girls, you going to hate me for saying this, but when it comes to makeup/skincare/anything else in the beauty department, you going to want to be selective. You’ll probably either have a shared bathroom, which you won’t want to clutter up, or have a small ensuite, which believe me, will not have enough space for vanity cases and the like. Perhaps just take your favourite, most used items and see how it goes.
