How to Avoid Alcohol at University
Gosh, how many times I changed my mind on this postโs title. Previous ideas included โHow to Survive at Uni and not Drink Alcoholโ and โHow to Avoid Alcohol at University and Have Funโ but they seemed too long. Anyway, enough of me rambling, I hope itโs clear what the post will be about.
You know Iโm not an alcohol fan, so letโs cut to the chase. Itโs the time of year when many new students are gearing up to go uni. Thereโll no doubt be nerves about the experience. One of my main worries regarding university was coping with the drinking culture when I didnโt drink. I soon discovered that I was not alone (huge sigh of relief). With that in mind, here are a few suggestions on how to have the best time at uni without going near the A-word.
How to Avoid Alcohol at University
Surround yourself with the right people
I’m fine if my friends want to drink. That’s their choice. However, I witnessed incidences where people are pressured to drink and when they don’t, they are labelled as boringย and ignored. This is really upsetting, so donโt be afraid to stop being โfriendsโ with such people. Life is too short to put up with that kind of treatment and you donโt want your university experience ruined right at the beginning.
Iโm lucky that my flatmates and course mates understand my feelings, some of them donโt drink either. If you’re in a situation where none of your flatmates etc. respect your decisions, here’s what you could do.

Societies
Thereโs a wealth of things to do at uni besides studying. Societies cater for a wide variety of interests and allow you to discover new hobbies. Perhaps try out societies not based around nights out. For example, at my uni, you could join groups such as baking, tea society and volunteering.
This past year, I was a member of the student newspaper. Meetings were at 4pm, and rather than alcohol, biscuits were the recurring refreshment.
Whatโs more, I made new friends and expanded my writing repertoire. Societies are definitely a good starting place.
Ask on Social Media
Most universities have Facebook groups for Freshersโ. Why not add a post asking if anyone isnโt fussed about drinking and wants to have an alcohol-free get together? Someone did this when I went to uni and a group of us went for a meal the first night of Freshersโ.

Start your Own Society
Whilst society weekly meetings may not include alcohol, the big socials still do! When it comes to how to avoid alcohol at university completely, what is the solution? Well, why not start your own alcohol-free society? You could organise events and trips out with the added bonus of being hangover free the next morning.
Of course, if you want to have a drink, then that’s fine. I’ve made it known that I like my Friday night G&T. When it’s the end of exams, treat yourself with that glass of prosecco. Whatever your attitude to alcohol, just make sure you think first about why you’re drinking and never let anyone force you to do something you don’t want to.

Thank you for writing this!! One of the things I’m most worried about going to uni is the pressure to drink so it’s reassuring to read your experience. I hope my flatmates understand, I am worried I’m going to miss out on most of the socialising by not joining in with pre-drinks etc. but I’m going to join societies so hopefully I’ll make friends that way ๐
I felt the same! Societies really help and if you had a bad time with accommodation (hopefully you won’t) there’s a chance you could move to a better place X
Yes! That’s reassuring! Hopefully it’ll be fine, just a lot of uncertainty at the moment!
Feel free to pop me a message if you want to talk X
Thank you! X
I love this, although im Doing uni from home, its so Good for people to know that You can stick to your preferences even when its unexpected. I never Used to drink and i was bullied for It in college, alcohol is definitely a choice and not one You should let others influeNce.xx

Absolutely! I’ve felt pressured to drink at times and it’s horrible. Always be yourself and do what you want to do. Anyway, being sober doesn’t mean you’re boring X
An insightful post into an extremely real topic
Thank you! Glad you liked it X
I went to drama school so I never was able to do the usual โuni binge drinkingโ. Sadly you just turn to the alcohol once youโre out of alcohol and in the industry as a coping mechanism haha! Great tips! I think people forget all the awesome opportunities there are at university to fill your spare time, aside from partying all the time.
Absolutely! I wish people would stop assuming that uni is all about nightlife etc.
I dont drink, and what i found worked best is to just be calm, but firm. For the most part, if i told people i donโt drink, they basically left me alone about it. (added bonus, more than a couple bars gave me free sodas as the designated driver!)
Haha that’s true. I don’t drive so I can’t experience that! Definitely being strict is key.
