Taking a Year Out of Uni
It’s that time of year again. Itโs back to university. Going back after a gap year feels weird. After having completed 2 years though, settling in is definitely easier and the routine is becoming familiar again. In hindsight, Iโm glad that I took time out given the unexpected Crohnโs discovery. However, when I made the decision, I didnโt know about it. Although leaving for a year was scary and I was worried about what people would think, at the end of the day, you have to do what is right for you. While the typical gap year time is between school and university, these are some factors which helped me know that taking a year out of uni in the middle of my degree was the right thing to do.
Youโre not enjoying your course
I would be lying if I said anxiety about my year abroad didnโt play a part, but one reason for switching from French and Linguistics to solely Linguistics is because I wasnโt enjoying a lot of the French course.
Most of the modules were history and literature-based, which was not my cup of tea as I preferred the linguistic side.
Starting my final year knowing that I can focus on Linguistics and having a clearer head following my year out has really helped.
It doesnโt matter what other people think
At first, I had trouble admitting how I felt because I didnโt want to cause anyone any inconvenience. As someone who loves to plan out their life, it also stressed me out at the thought of the plan going off course.
I came to realise that I had to whatโs right for me and my wellbeing. I didnโt want to be doing something for the next couple of years that wasnโt my true passion.
Needed a break from education
Having constantly been in education since the age of 4, the academic year cycle was starting to get overwhelming.
With the final year of university being one of the most important yet, I didnโt want to start it not feeling 100%.
Having a break means I have found more motivation. I can now go into my dissertation year with a clearer head.

Personal reflective post over now!
Let me know if you are thinking about taking a year out of uni. If you’re not sure itโs the right thing to do, I’m happy to chat.
Likewise, speak to your university to see if thereโs a way to help you with your studies.

Whilst I canโt relate directly to this I can definitely relate to the overall message linking to life. Iโm glad you have settled back well and that you are happy with your choices. Iโm also impressed that you are studying linguistics because I donโt think I could!
Aw thanks! I don’t think I could do what you do just yet!
